Patient Cases

Case 39: Bilateral Madelung's Deformity

Young woman with bilateral Madelung's deformity, including intra-articular radius deformity, radial diaphysis deformity, and distal-ulnar-radial joint instability. We treated her with a volar incision and intra-articular osteotomy of the distal radius to elevate the lunate facet, as well as a second osteotomy to align the lower radius. Reconstruction of the radial-ulnar joint was also performed. Internal fixation was applied to hold the alignment in place. This surgery was performed on both upper extremities in a two-stage fashion.

Case 40: Madelung's Deformity, left side, and Mesomelic Dysplasia

Adolescent male with Madelung's deformity on the left side and mesomelic dysplasia. Patient presented with intra-articular radius deformity and distal-ulnar-radial joint instability. We performed an intra-articular osteotomy of the distal radius to elevate the lunate facet, as well as a second osteotomy to align the lower radius. Reconstruction of the radial-ulnar joint was also performed. Internal fixation was applied to hold the alignment in place.
