Physical Therapy Department

The Paley Institute is proud to offer a dedicated on-site Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department. The Paley Institute Physical Therapy Department is specially trained in the rehabilitation and treatment of limb lengthening, and complex limb and spinal deformity correction. The Rehabilitation Department also has a dedicated Clubfoot Clinic that specializes in the Ponseti Method for the treatment of Clubfoot.

The Paley Rehabilitation Department is conveniently located on the west side of the Kimmel Building on St. Mary's compus, just down the hall from the Paley Institute clinic.

Fran Guardo, M. Ed., MPT, DPT - Director of Rehabilitation

Fran Guardo has been the Director of the Rehabilitation Department at the Paley Institute since 2009. Fran received her B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science from Colorado State University and received a Master of Education in Exercise Science and Wellness from Florida Atlantic University. Fran then received her Masters of Physical Therapy and Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University.

Fran has worked in various settings, including acute care, outpatient rehabilitation, home health, school-based therapy, aquatic rehabilitation, pediatric obesity management, geriatric management, and cardiac rehabilitation. Fran has over 20 years of experience in exercise science and rehabilitation and previously managed her own consulting firm. Fran's experience has served to deepen her love for, and understanding of, movement science. 

Fran feels very fortunate to lead the Institiute's rehabilitation team and to work with such a diverse and interesting mix of patients. Fran organizes an international conference each year to train physical therapists and surgeons internationally in the rehabilitation techniques used to treat this highly specialized population. Fran also serves as an adjunct professor for Nova Southeastern University, where she lectures in the physical therapy department.

Fran is an avid exerciser and loves to run, swim, lift weights, and practice yoga. During her undergraduate studies, Fran spent a semester studying in Mexico and began a lifelong journey into Latin culture and the Spanish language. Fran is fluent in Spanish and is learning bits and pieces of many languages through our diverse patient population. Fran loves to travel and hopes to visit many of the various countries represented by our patients.

Matthew Thomas - Practice & Financial Manager, Rehabilitation

Matthew has been the Concierge Practice & Financial Manager for the Paley Institute Rehabilitation Department since May, 2014. Matthew received his B.S. in Biology from Brigham Young University in Idaho and a Masters of Healthcare Administration from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania.

Matthew has over 7 years of experience in healthcare and previously served for two years as the Administrator, Business Development for an outpatient physical therapy corporation that was comprised of 13 satellite clinics spanning Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Matthew managed an inpatient hospitalist group comprised of 15 internal medicine physicians for 4 years in New Jersey. He serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Scranton in the Healthcare Administration Department and is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Matthew enjoys spending quality time with his wife and two children, who enjoy playing at the park, pool, and beach. Matthew is an avid sports fan and supports the Seattle Seahawks, the Oregon State Beavers, and the Portland Trailblazers.
